Last autumn, a consortium of European research organisations and consultancies led by WRc was appointed to a European Commission framework, providing services for the development and implementation of EU freshwater policies.
The consortium has successfully bid for 5 contracts under this framework, which have been in place since December 2012. These contracts involve:
- Compliance checking of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) implementation, including an assessment of the first River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs) from a small number of Member States who were late in completing their plans, and the assessment of progress being made with the implementation of Programmes of Measures, as well as a review of lessons learned from the first cycle of RBMP assessments (also led by WRc).
- Two contracts checking and assessing the Preliminary Flood Risk Assessments required under the Floods Directive, including the development of an assessment framework and the production of European-level and Member State level overviews.
- Collection of the necessary information to underpin a potential Commission proposal for the revision of parts of the Groundwater Directive and an assessment of the social, environmental and economic impacts.
- Providing technical support to the Commission for the Commission’s bilateral meetings with Member States on issues arising from implementation of the Water Framework Directive.
This work builds on WRc’s support to the Commission over the past 13 years with regards to WFD implementation.
