WRc announces contract win investigating BFRs with ICER

September 28, 2018 Categories: Latest News

WRc is pleased to be working for ICER (funded by the WEEE fund) to investigate the levels of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in plastics from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). WRc’s waste doctors will be sampling at various WEEE facilities across the UK for the next two months to recover plastics from TVs and computer monitors, flat panel display casings, small and large domestic appliances, fridges, cables and printed circuit boards.  The project aims to screen 1000s of units for bromine levels using hand-held XRF spectrometers and further selected analysis to confirm ‘which’ BFRs are present in UK WEEE by high resolution laboratory analysis. The project will provide industry with robust data to inform waste classification’ with respect to these POPs to ensure appropriate recovery or destruction if required.
