Any fittings installed to carry or receive water from the public mains supply in the UK must comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations, and this includes any fluids or chemicals that may be used in these fittings.
Any fluid that may potentially come into contact with drinking water systems (e.g. cleaning agents, metal working fluids) must be assessed and classified into one of the five Fluid Categories specified by the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS). The Fluid Categories define the level of backflow protection required when using these chemicals, based on their hazards.
The National Centre for Environmental Toxicology (NCET) at WRc has many years of experience in classifying chemicals into these Fluid Categories, and can therefore provide support to industrial clients to help them maintain their regulatory compliance.
