Intermittent discharges from combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and storm tanks occur when sewer networks and wastewater treatment works become hydraulically overloaded.  These discharges have become increasingly environmentally, socially and politically unacceptable as waste water assets struggle to copy with population growth and unusual weather patterns.
