WRc have for over 20 years been actively investigating the causes of blockages, the effect of low flows and fats, oils and greases (FOG) and so-called ’flushable products’. Expertise has been gained from working closely with water industry representatives, the environmental regulator and industrial clients.

Our aim is to help our clients to operate the existing sewer network efficiently when factors such as climate change, FOG, disposable products and food waste as well, as lower flows in the sewer network making it more challenging.

Our projects range from the examination of sewer network issues, including blockage causes, misconnections and sewer flooding, to introducing cost effective solutions for operating the  sewer network more effectively.

To improve FOG management in the catering industry we are undertaking commercial kitchen audits and training catering staff. We are also giving training on FOG awareness to water industry representatives and Environmental Health Officers.

Our extensive flow testing facilities allow us to investigate the effective operation of a sewerage network, particularly the effects of reduced water usage and blockage formation, flushable products, efficient pipework arrangements and flushing devices.

Our experts have acquired considerable experience in the development of testing protocols for flushable products.

WRc also operate an industry recognised scheme for the approval of FOG mitigation devices (grease separators and  dosing systems) and flushable products.
