UK water and sewerage companies are reviewing current management strategies for wastewater screenings, to reduce landfill disposal costs and meet their zero waste aspirations. The composition of this waste stream makes it a challenge for recovery, but volumes are increasing with an ever-growing population and wider use of flushable products.
UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) commissioned WRc to review current and developing technologies for recovering value from screenings and deliver an evaluation framework for assessing their technical feasibility, environmental impact and economic benefits. The decision tree approach allows the practical issues and applicability of selected options to be assessed on a case-by-case basis to ensure sound investment in new process technology or screenings management solutions. This tool will deliver long-term financial benefits to the industry and its customers and will help to drive screenings management further up the waste management hierarchy.
