Mimicking meter failures to reduce costs and customer disruption

A water company contacted WRc following a series of unexplained, and quite unusual, meter failures at a number of homes in their areas. The meters in question are widely used for metering household and small non-household premises in the UK and overseas, and such failures have not been seen before.

We carried out site inspections to understand the installations, and followed this with a series of in-house tests to mimic the conditions and use of the meters. By replicating the failures within our test facilities and subsequently altering potential causal factors, we can identify the root cause of the problem.

The payback period to the company of identifying the cause and preventing such failures in the future will be between 3 and 6 months – representing a significant cost saving to the company, and reducing inconvenience experienced  by customers.
