Weight of Evidence Review of Lead
Compounds in Waste

The Environmental Services Association commissioned a ‘weight of evidence’ review for lead compounds to support the hazard classification of Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA). This is a complex issue with respect to both the evidence and the relevance to the species present in IBA.

WRc’s toxicology and waste experts collated information on lead compounds with the potential to be found in IBA on the basis of their physico-chemical properties. They reviewed harmonised and non-harmonised chemical classifications for each compound, taking into consideration authoritative risk assessments and opinions from expert panels e.g. ECHA and IARC.

WRc prepared a weight of evidence judgement for lead compounds in IBA. ESA have used this as supporting evidence for the assessment of carcinogenicity.
