WRc provides consultancy and research & development (R&D) services on odour for:

  • domestic wastewater
  • industry
  • municipal waste.

Odour emissions are important because they can cause complaints from local residents and businesses and cause odour standards not to be met. In addition, the installation of new facilities usually requires the effect of odour emissions to be assessed as part of the planning permission process.

The most cost effective option(s) can be found when there is a full understanding of the underlying causes of odour emissions. In addition, good operating, maintenance and monitoring procedures for odour control equipment are important for ensuring that odour mitigation measure(s) continue to work.

Services offered:

  • environmental impact assessments for new or modified facilities
  • reviews of odour emissions at existing works to identify, quantify and model (using atmospheric dispersion modelling) the impact of odour sources
  • identify and model cost effective odour mitigation measures
  • independently adjudicate on disputes between companies
  • carry out performance efficiency tests on odour abatement equipment
  • survey and model sewers and rising mains for septicity and corrosion
  • measure odour emissions from municipal wastes.

WRc provides R&D services as collaborative and single client projects. These have covered:

  • septicity in rising mains and corrosion in sewers
  • writing odour management plans
  • testing additives for controlling odour emissions from sewage and sludge
  • modelling and optimising covers and ventilation
  • estimating odour emission rates from mechanically handling sewage sludge.
