In recent years, WRc has evaluated potential alternatives to traditional filter media for water treatment (including use of recycled glass and expanded clay materials through pilot scale studies).
WRc has recently completed a pilot scale filtration study for Severn Trent Water in Warwickshire. The work focused on rapid gravity filtration for water treatment, using dual media. The project compared performance of traditional sand and anthracite media with an alternative dual media comprised of two different grades of an expanded clay, known as “Filtralite”.
The work at the pilot plant, based at Campion Hills water treatment works provided a thorough performance assessment of the two different dual media and whole life cost and also a carbon impact assessment.
