Environmental evidence provides the basis for assessing the state of the environment, developing management solutions and evaluating the effectiveness of policy implementation. WRc appreciates the critical importance and value of scientifically robust information to policy makers and decision takers.

We provide the advice, support and tools required to implement cost-effective solutions to contemporary environmental problems. Trusted by the water industry and by European and UK regulators alike, we are often the first port of call for authoritative information on which to base strategic decisions.

The WRc Environmental Evidence team offers a combination of state of the art scientific knowledge, robust statistical interrogation of empirical data and high level catchment modelling techniques to compile and independently evaluate environmental evidence in the context of the prevailing policy landscape.

Our core expertise in the understanding of the response of the aquatic environment to a wide range of human pressures is increasingly being deployed to investigate some of the main environmental pollution issues of the day.

For example, diffuse pollution from agriculture results in the increased delivery of nutrients, sediment and pesticides to aquatic systems. This source of pollution is being tackled by the UK environmental regulators through initiatives such as Catchment Sensitive Farming. The UK Water Industry is also contributing through AMP-funded catchment initiatives aimed primarily at improving drinking water sources. We are working with a range of clients to demonstrate the effectiveness and quantify the benefits of these schemes.

WRc recognises the importance of legislative and regulatory controls as drivers of environmental improvement and we work with governments, regulators and businesses to help all stakeholders meet their environmental obligations in the most cost effective manner.

WRc’s policy and legislation team offers support to the river basin planning process across the UK, European Union and the rest of the world. We have an established international reputation for providing independent advice to governments and environmental regulators for developing and implementing water policy and, we work with businesses to help them see their way through environmental legislation so they  can understand and meet all their regulatory obligations.

Key benefits of working with WRc include:

  • A well-established reputation for working with governments and international regulators, as well as the regulated community.
  • In-depth understanding of environmental policy and legislation, including EC Directives such as the Water Framework, Habitats, Urban Waste Water Treatment, Nitrates, and Bathing Water Directives.
