Defra have awarded WRc a contract to monitor pressures in 6 water distribution systems for a year with the cooperation of water companies. When low pressure events occur, background information will be collected in order to identify a cause. Examples of possible causes are a pump stopping or a large burst. These events will be investigated to determine if there is a causal link, why the low pressure occurred at a particular location and what would be the effect of a change in the severity of the initiating event.
In addition to understanding the mechanisms, the work will also improve the estimate of the frequency of these events and suggest improvements in operational practice to reduce the risk of ingress.
