Human Health and Environmental Risk Assessment - NCET
There is an increasing awareness of the risks posed to human health and to the environment by chemicals, microbes and other naturally occurring and manmade substances. The National Centre for Environmental Toxicology (NCET) provides independent expert advice on these risks both in the form of consultancy for risk assessment and an advisory service giving a rapid response to incidents which could threaten human health or the environment.
History/Background
We have many years experience in conducting risk assessments, undertaken on
a wide range of chemicals. These risks are assessed to the highest standards in various media, such as drinking water, surface water and contaminated soil and sediment, for a range of pollution events from major incidents (e.g. the fire at the Buncefield oil depot) to smaller scale incidents (e.g. a divinylbenzene tanker leak in Grangemouth). Also, longer term risk assessments are regularly undertaken by the team to derive environmental quality standards (EQSs) and levels to protect human health and the environment from pollution episodes.
NCET has been awarded Approved Supplier status by REACHReady, the Chemical Industries Associations scheme for assisting manufacturers compliance with the REACH Regulation.
More information on our specialist topic areas and examples
of case studies can be found in the following sections:
What areas do we cover?
- Environmental fate including persistence, biodegradability
and behavioural effects based on chemical properties e.g. solubility
and volatility.
- Effects on human health, aquatic and terrestrial life,
livestock and processes such as water and wastewater treatment.
- Environmental assessment and the setting of standards,
such as: Environmental Quality Standards (EQS), IPPC impact assessments,
the setting of human health guidelines and soil guideline values.
- Preparing risk assessments of chemicals to meet regulatory
requirements such as those envisaged under the REACH proposals.
- Environmental risk assessments of chemicals of concern
to the chemical and retail industry.
- Independent research and consulting on managing risks
from harmful microorganisms in the environment.
NCET work with both UK and International Clients providing
water, regulatory and industrial sectors with advice and practical solutions
on environmental sources, pathways and fate of chemicals and harmful microbes
and their effects on human and ecological receptors.
