WRc Portfolio CP329 project “specification and maintenance of geocellular underground SUDS storage systems”

WRc hosted the start-up meeting for the above project in December 2007, the project is sponsored by four Water and Sewerage Companies, the British Plastic Federation’s Plastic Pipes Group and manufacturers of geocellular Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS).

These systems comprise individual modules assembled together to form an underground structure that can either be used as a storm water storage or a domestic soak away. They are wrapped overall in an impermeable geomembrane for storage solutions and a permeable membrane for soak ways. They operate by either limiting the outflow to conventional drainage systems or providing temporary storage or if conditions allow providing soak ways for the storm water to infiltrate back into the ground.

Some trials of these systems are already being undertaken by Sewerage Undertakers and developers, usually at the behest of a manufacturer. However, these trials are not being coordinated across the country and there would be a benefit to all sewerage undertakers if they were.

The objectives of this project are to establish Sewerage Undertaker’s technical concerns, identify solutions, visit UK trials, develop best practice guidance and prepare a draft Specification for design, installation, operation and maintenance.
