In the letter of 5th August 2009 to Regulatory Directors of all water and sewerage companies and water only companies (PR09/32), Ofwat identified a number of key focus points for the water industry for the next price review. Among these is the recommendation to develop an ‘understanding of the spatial and temporal variability of the consequences of failure alongside operational responses.’
WRc have developed an SVG-based visualisation tool that does exactly this - displaying both a geographical representation of the network showing where things happen alongside the same information displayed as a dynamically-linked temporal graph showing when things happen, thereby enabling the user to make informed decisions in a simple but effective manner.
The application is web-based so provides easy access for users. It is quick to implement and interface with existing data sources and systems and can be used both for data distribution within the company and for presentation outside the company. The most significant benefit is the speed with which the information is presented to the user. The application compiles the necessary information and generates data files which are used to build the graphical elements dynamically. Another key benefit is the simplicity of the interface. Little or no training is required as the system is highly intuitive making it suitable for all levels of users.
Visidat has been developed with Severn Trent Water (STW) where it is used extensively by the leakage management team.
Richard Chalk, Leakage Strategy Manager at STW, says that the "Visidat tool has proven to be an essential part of both our Asset Investment Planning and operational activities. Visidat has proven particularly effective in analysing otherwise complex datasets in a fast and intuitive way."
