Over the past 3 years WRc has been working for the Strategic Forum for Construction (SFfC) Water Subgroup as an Expert Secretariat, funded most recently by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme). The SFfC is responsible for delivering a water target included in the joint industry and Government Strategy “Strategy for Sustainable Construction”, namely:
“water usage in the manufacturing and construction phase to be reduced by 20% by 2012 compared to 2008 usage”.
To date the group has developed a methodology for calculating water use in construction, calculated a 2008 baseline against which progress can be measured and published an Action Plan to move towards the 20% reduction.
The Action Plan report, launched at an event in London in June this year, is available for download at http://www.strategicforum.org.uk/water.shtml. Shortly, a progress report will also be published detailing how far the industry has moved and outlining the next steps for the group.
