WRc has recently completed a study reviewing technical regulation in relation to water services in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The study involved a benchmarking exercise to compare technical regulation in ACT with that in England and Wales. As a result of the comparison of the two systems, the strengths and weaknesses of the current situation in ACT were identified and recommendations made as to how the system could be strengthened. Topics covered included:

  • Business and asset management planning
  • Emergency planning
  • Water resource management
  • Surface water management
  • Customer service standards
  • Performance standards
  • Construction and installation standards
  • Dam safety
  • Metering

The results of the study will be used by ACTPLA to inform an ongoing review of the Utilities Act 2000 and the framework of technical regulation in place in ACT.
