Three year Waste Analysis Services Contract for Dumfries and Galloway Council

BM100 Testing Rig WRc has been contracted by Dumfries & Galloway Council to undertake continuous monitoring of their waste processing facilities based in Dumfries- the Ecodeco MBT plant at Locharmoss and the Galdenoch MBT Composting plant at Stranraer. This contract builds on an initial exercise where WRc undertook an independent characterisation and statistical evaluation of each plant’s performance. Following the evaluation exercise, optimum sample sizes and sampling numbers for onward monitoring of the 2 waste treatment facilities were recommended by WRc to the Council.

The current independent monitoring programme is aimed at assisting Dumfries and Galloway Council with:

  • Quantifying the diversion/recovery of Municipal Waste (MW) from landfill
  • Estimating the reduction in the amount of Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW) sent to landfill.

The analytical programme involves routine testing for percentage composition, dry matter content (DM), loss on ignition content (LOI) and standard measures of aerobic (DR4) and anaerobic (BM100) biodegradability. The testing programme is being conducted using standard test methods in accordance with the current Environment Agency guidance for England and Wales, the current Scottish Environment Agency guidance for Scotland and relevant BS CEN standards. Monitoring is being undertaken on a quarterly basis and interim reports are issued to Dumfries and Galloway Council following completion of analytical testing.
