WRc is working with UK Water Industry Research Ltd to assess disinfection trends with respect to chlorine.

Chlorine gas cylindersChlorine is relatively inexpensive, easy to apply and has played a major role in preventing the spread of waterborne disease. Concerns over its safety , reactions with organic matter in water to produce disinfection by-products, and its association with taste and odour complaints, have led to consideration of alternatives for water treatment and distribution. There is also concern over increasing costs and a reduction in the number of suppliers.

Through a survey of Water Companies, the work is assessing the current usage of, and dependency on, chlorine for water treatment. Acceptability of chlorine, in terms of customer perception and environmental concerns, is being evaluated, and potential future regulatory implications are being identified. Costs and performance of alternatives to chlorine for water treatment are also being reviewed. The output from the work will assist Water Companies in the development of strategies for disinfection in the medium to long term, including identification of the most appropriate treatment alternatives for particular situations.
